Chapter 9 Excerpt

I probably should have put up an excerpt from Chapter 8, but the gist is Jamie was the victim of a hit and run, setup by the mob.  Toni was by her bedside day an night while she was in a coma and in the middle of confessing how bad she had been Jamie came out the Coma and heard it all.  So Jamie wanted to see Darin, who was too upset to even come to hospital, but who arranged for protection while she was there.    Pick it up here where Toni comes back the next day after Jamie requested to see Darin…..

The next morning when Toni walked into Jamie’s room, Jamie was sitting up in the bed and looking even more alive than the day before.  Toni’s first thought was that she looked like a wreck!

“Hey….thanks for all those days.   I knew you were there the whole time, but I couldn’t communicate with you.”

“Really,” said Toni, “That’s amazing!”

“Really!”  Jamie confirmed.  “So you weren’t able to convince Darin to come?”

“Come, come now.  You know us ladies have our ways!  He’s outside talking to the officer on guard duty.  You know Darin.  He’s business first.”

“Silly me.  I should have known.”

“Hang on a sec.”  Toni went over to the door and said something Jamie could not hear and then returned.

“What was all that about?” asked Jamie.

“Honey you look like you just got run over by a truck.”

“Funny you should mention that.  But I believe it was a car.”

“Well, I just told Darin to wait a sec while we get you all freshened up.”  Toni held up a hand mirror that was sitting on the table for Jamie to see herself.

Jamie’s eyes got very big and she almost let out a shreik.

“Now,” said Toni, “No reason why we have to anybody but the Dr. and the nurse in here to see you in this condition.”  With that Toni pulled a hair brush out of her purse and began to gently brush Jamies hair.  Jamie could not believe how incredibly gently Toni was being.

When Toni was done she held up the hand mirror.  Jamie looked much more presentable.  Not too much could be done about the black and blue bruises and contusions.  There was a quick second when the two ladies locked eyes in which Jamie communicated, “Thanks for caring.”  And Toni’s gaze responded, “What are friends for.”

Darin, waiting on the other side of the door has had indication that so much has changed between these two ladies.  He knows that Toni has been coming to see Jamie, but he attributed that to her compassion and being the help meet who handled what he needed help with becasue he could not handle it himself.

Toni went to the door and said, “The patient will see you now detective.”

Darin walked into the room, a bit apprehensively.  He was still feeling self conscious about not being there for her when she needed him to be.  Darin was very glad that Jamie was looking as good as she did.  He was expecting much, much worse form the images that he had conured up in his mind.  Darin was finding it very hard to hold Jamie’s gaze in the first seconds after he walked into the room. What was he going to say.  How could he explain?  Darin had prayed and prayed and felt like there was no return on the investment.  Even though he knew he had to wait on God.

It had only been a few seconds.  A few long seconds, but to Darin it felt like an eternity.  Jamie noticed how taxed Darin had been.  He needed a good shave, he had bags under his eyes that could have held a weeks worth of groceries and he seemed to have aged some since the last time she saw him.  Darin, who was usually immaculately dressed looked like he had just thrown something on that he would rummage around the house in.  His walk was not confident and was not steady.  Most noticeably, he did not have that Darin Frost glow about him.

Jamie broke the ice, “Well, if you’re not going to speak, I guess I will.  Good Morining.  You look like you just fell off of a truck.”

Jamie’s voice was still a little weak, but again, a whole lot better than Darin was expecting.  “Well,” said Darin, “I was expecting to see you looking like you fell off of a truck, but, while you don’t look as good as this pretty lady over there,” he said looking over in Toni’s direction, “you look like a million bucks!”

Now, THAT was vintage Darin.  Hold his wife higher but still the man with the compliment.  Jamie knew she looked presentable, but like a million bucks?  That was a far stretch if she ever heard one.  However, that is exactly the way Darin was, uplifting everybody around him and meaning it.

Toni, like a movie director had to direct Darin over to Jamie’s bedside.  He had taken up residence at the foot of the bed.  As far away from her as he could possilby be, but still be close.  A lot of Darin’s awkwardness was the fact that Toni was in the room and he was guarded and to how enthusiastic he wanted to sound, knowing the problems that Toni had  with his relationship with Jamie.   Of course, it was still uknown to Darin at this point, but HAD was the operative word here.

At his wire’s direction, Darin stepped over to the side of the bed.  He smiled warmly but he still felt awkard and kept glancing over at Toni every few seconds.  Finally he spoke….

“Hey Jamie, listen, I uh…..”

“Darin.”  Jamie’s verse was stern.  Darin felt like he just got reprimaned with one word. “Listen, parnter, you’ve always been there for me and I have never thought anything else.  End of discussion”

Darin began to speak and he had that argumentative look on his face that Jamie and Toni both knew so well.

Jamie spoke again, “Listen, when is the last time you left the house other than to go to Church or to a Drs. appointment?”

Darin couldn’t answer.  It has been so long that Toni had to answer for him…”Its been a good long while,” Toni said.

“Yeah, I know,” said Jamie.  “Darin I’ve been thinking about this for a good long time……well since last night anyway.  You wanna know what I think.  Well, I don’t care if you want to know you’re going hear it.”

Darin raised his left eyebrow in the “Mr. Spock” fashion, as if to nonverabally say, “really?”

Jamie continued, “I think God used this little incident to one very important reason and one reason only.  He wasn’t trying to tell me anything.  He was trying to get your attention.  And he knew what he had to do to get it.”

The revelation hit Darin smack in the face.  Its what God had been trying to tell him all along and he couldn’t see it for the nose on his face!

“Now,” said Jamie, “that he’s got your attention, let him have the rest of you back.  Its time to get back to living.  The Doc says I’m going to be OK.  What’s you Doc say?  Haven’t gone to see the couselor yet have you?  I’m OK.  Now if you won’t go for you and you won’t go for me, then Go for Toni, because you’re breaking her up more than you know.”

Darin looked over at Toni and saw that she had tears running down her face, but she still had her smile. He was so glad she didn’t need and didn’t wear makeup.  He hated to see running mascara.

In the time it took Darin to look back from Toni to Jamie, she now had tears streaming down her face.  What was he going to do now.  Well he knew what he was going to do, he had just lost the war so he may as well concede.  Dain didn’t speak he just shook his head yes.  Both ladies were overjoyed.   Toni ran up to him and gave him a big hug and planted a kiss right smack on the lips.  For a moment Darin and Toni forgot Jamie was there…which was alright with her.

When they turned back, Jamie still had tears streaming down her face.  Toni went over and gave her a big hug, careful not cause any injury.  Darin felt kind of awkward.  He wanted to do something but you could see torment in his face because Toni was there and because they had  a no touching policy.   The ladies seemed to take pleasure in his dicomfort and for the first time, Drarin noticed that they were getting along like…….FRIENDS!  His gaze went from one to the other in disbelief.

They giggled.  Both knowing what was going through his head.  Finally, Toni said, “Get over here and give the girl a hug you big oaf!”

Now Darin’s eyes got really wide.  Did HIS wife just suggest what he thoguth?

“Oh, I know about your self imposed no touching policy and a whole lot of other things too.  Friends talk you know.”

Just as Darin stepped up to give Jamie hug, Toni grabbbed his arm and snuggly and said, “Hey don’t try anything funny, I’ll be right here!”  As Darin gave Jamie a gentle and comforting hug, they all had good laugh.

Excerpt from Chapter 7

I just wrote this piece for a scene in Chapter 7 and I liked it so much that I thought I would post it and share it with you all.  I just like the way my mind worked from beginning to end on this piece, I hope you do too.

Darin was down and out but everybody else was doing all that they could to bring him back.  It was odd to be in an room with Darin Frost and not experience his exuberance.  The downcast, life is not worth living attitude that was being projected now was just not what anybody was used to or what anybody wanted to continue to see.

Darin Frost touched a lot of people with his life and those people were all willing to turn around and give back everything that he gave them.  The love that everyone had for Darin was indescribable.  Darin was a man who did not pre-judge people and let them earn the merits on which he was going to eventually judge them.  If you knew Darin Frost, it was a rare case if he did not eventually consider you to be a friend……if it didn’t happen right away!

Stephanie Frost, was a master cook of breakfast food.  All of the Frost girls could cook.  Their mom would not have it any other way.  When Toni’s girls left this house, they were going to be able to take care of their man.  What better way to train them than to first train them to take care of their daddy!

Stephanie’s French Toast was a favorite of her Dad’s.  Especially with bacon.  Stephanie agonized over what she could do to help her Dad and decided that she would make his favorite breakfast.  That was sure to bring a smile to his face.    Darin liked to get up early so Stephanie was going to have to get up earlier.  A small sacrifice for he dad, though, she thought.

One morning at 5:30 AM, Stephanie got out of bed, freshened up and ambled down to the kitchen.  Darin was just coming down to make his pot of coffee.  Toni was on his heels because she had also determined to get breakfast for her husband this morning.  When everyone got to the kitchen they found Lisa already in the kitchen.  She had her pajamas and bathrobe on.  Her hair was still up from the night.  She looked like a walking zombie — Lisa was not a morning person.   But she too had a breakfast favorite that her dad liked and was already pouring the water into the coffee pot for his morning cup of coffee.  DJ was noticeably missing —presumably asleep.

“Well, well, well.  What have we here?”  said Darin.  “The three most beautiful young ladies in Scottsdale all converging on the kitchen at the same time.  Somebody want to to tell me whats going on here.  I’m usually the only soul awake at this time of the morning.”

The three ladies looked at each other and did not know what to say.

“What to do you say you go off to your study and start your devotions, dear and we’ll bring you your coffee when it is ready.  Shouldn’t be long now.”

“OK, Mrs. Frost,” said Darin, “what are you three up to?”

“Well, to be quite honest with you dear, I don’t think any of us are quite sure yet, but we’ll get that settled in a jiffy.  Now get of our kitchen and let us do our work.  This is our domain.”

Now even Darin was confused, but he knew better than to argue with one woman, much less three.  So, off he went to the study.   Darin had not been getting a whole lot out of his devotions of late, but that is because he was blocking God from communicating with him.  He knew that and he prayed that God would help him to open the channels again.  But there was always some preoccupation.  Always something that stopped him.  He remembered reading in his devotions the day before in Daniel 10:13 how the angel was held back by Satan.  That is what he perceived was going on now in his life.

Back in the Kitchen the Frost ladies were having a conference.

“OK, girls maybe we should talk.  It appears to me that we all had the same idea.”

“Well, Mom, ” said Stephanie, “I just wanted to do SOMETHING for Dad.  He’s been so down lately and he really likes it when I cook him his favorite French Toast.”

“Well,” said Lisa, “I know he likes my biscuits and gravy.  And he always says I make almost as good a pot of coffee as you do.  I just wanted to do something to cheer him up too.”

“And I didn’t think any of you would be up so I thought I would get to the Kitchen before you father and whip up some grits and eggs for him to have with his coffee,” said Toni, “And I really wanted to have some bacon to go with it, since that is his favorite, but I didn’t get a chance to go shopping yet and so all we have is sausage.”

“What? No bacon?”  said the other two girls in awe.

Lisa didn’t need any bacon to go with her breakfast plans but she knew that the other two ladies did.  It was just unlike them to not have everything that they needed in the kitchen when they started cooking.  Toni was so good at keeping everything stocked that everyone just assumed that what they needed was always going to be there.

“Just then the back door opened very quietly.  DJ was obviously trying to sneak in and was greeted with the very inquisitive looks of the three Frost Ladies.  The “And what are you up to?” looks on all three of their faces said it all.   But Toni voiced it anyway.

“DJ,” said Toni, “I don’t suppose you realize that it is 5:40 in the morning and you should be in bed.”

Toni realized just how silly that sounded when the three of them were standing there in the kitchen, now very wide awake.

“Yeah, I know mom,” said DJ, “But Dad left some money in my room with a note and so there was something that I had to take care of.”

“What note?” said Toni, “And what do you have in the bag there.”

“Well, mom, I’m not sure if I should tell you what the note says, and I would really appreciate it if the three of you would step into the living room for just 20 seconds.”

“I don’t think so!”  Came the resounding chorus form the three ladies.

“Now son,” said Toni, “hand over the note and tell us whats in the bag,” said Toni as she held out her hand expectantly.

Darin, who had always been fussed at because he did not make  a whole lot of noise when he walked, had heard the commotion and came out to the kitchen to see what all was going on now.  The ladies didn’t know he was there because he was behind them, but DJ was facing him and in cried out in a desperate voice, “Dad what am I supposed to do?  The note says…..”

Darin held up his hand to stop DJ and began to speak.

“The first thing you’re going to do, regardless of what the note says is obey your mother.  Give her the note and the bag and you come with me.  I need a prayer partner this morning.  I think the ladies will be pretty busy without us.”

Darin did as ordered, relieved to be out of the hot seat with the Frost ladies, and went back to the study with his Dad.  It had been a long time since they prayed together, so this was definitely a good sign.  It was a little thing, but it was more than they had seen lately.

Back in the kitchen Toni read the note aloud.

“Darin.  I know the way that I have been acting lately has been of some concern.  I’m working on getting back to my old self, but it just might take a while.  But if I know the ladies in our house, one of them is going to want to get up and make me breakfast to help cheer me up.  I happened to notice that your Mom has not had time to go shopping.  If you don’t mind getting up early…and I do mean early….would you please run down to the 24 hour market and get a few pounds of bacon.  You can leave the change on my desk.   And by the way son, for now this will just be our little secret.    Dad.”

All three ladies looked at each other in awe and then did the only thing they could do.  They all began to laugh.  They should have known better than to try to pull one over on Dad.  The ladies decided that they would have a really big breakfast and make all three of the meals they had come down to make.  They would then have the leftovers for brunch or lunch, since everyone in the Frost house loved breakfast food so much.  So with the men now out of the way, the ladies set out to their task of making the morning meal.

Chapter 6 Excerpt

Here is the next excerpt!  This one is rather lengthy (4000+ words!), but it is out of necessity because this is my first attempt at scene shifting.   BTW thanks to my buddy capitlaggeek for introducing me to yWriter.  It is excellent for this type of work!   I know this will take some heavy editing when all of the writing is done to fix some disconnects and improve believability, but in the mean time enjoy my brain dump!

Darin’s mind was so preoccupied that he almost missed the signal.  Jamie had to tap him on his arm…

“There it is,” said Jamie, “thats our signal that all is clear and we can go inside.  You OK?  You still seem to be pretty lost in your thoughts.”

“No, no, I’m alright,” said Darin, “I’m ready to finish this up.  I just hate being at odds with Toni.”

“Yeah, I noticed.  It shows just a little you know,” Jamie said as she smiled.

Darin spoke into his lapel….

“All units take your positions.  Detectives Carpenter and Frost are about to move in.  I repeat, all units take your positions.  Detectives Carpenter and Frost are about to move in.  We just got the all clear from our contact, but everything still looks pretty dark in there.  Stand ready for the about signal.”

Jamie spoke into the microphone that was attached to her shirt collar….

“Sound test.  Testing 1-2-3, testing.  Testing 1-2-3, testing.”

A single reply came back to both detectives:

“Dectectives Frost and Carpenter, we read you loud and clear.  Your signal is wall wall and tree top tall.”  Darin remembered from his old CB radio days that ‘wall to wall and tree top tall’ saying was simply a way to say that they could hear us loud and clear.

Darin and Jamie got out of the car and headed toward the building.  Both carefully looking to try and make sure that they did not walk into a trap.  Something did not feel right, but Darin couldnot put his finger on it.  There was something about this setup that was all wrong, but they HAD to nail the Campinieri’s.  They entered the building cuatiously through the door that was previouisly agreed upon.  Now it was not clear which way to go so they watched and planned.

Click!

Both Darin and Jamie turned toward the door that they had come in.  It was clear that the door had just locked, but how.  Darin and Jamie both at the same time spoke into their lapel microphones:
“Abort, Abort, its a trap!  Abort.  Back up inside on the double.”
No response.  The Adrenalin began to rush.

Darin and Jamie looked at each other with a look of uncertainty.  Neither was sure of what was going on.  Darin could see lights off in the distance in two different directions.  He judged which way was the more dangerous route and inidcated to Jamie by pointing and without speaking that he would go to the left and she should go to the right.   Jamie, also having assessed the situation knew that Darin had picked the more dangerous route and wanted to swich.  Darin would not have it.  Jamie knew she wasn’t going to win the silent argument.  They indicated with their watches that they would meet bac at this spot in 10 minutes.  Very slowly both partnes crept off.

Darin had been to this buidlding before and did not remember this first level being this open.  They must be doing some modfications here. Darin’s mind started to drift back to Toni.  Why didn’t she understand?

And that’s when it happened.  Darin was distracted long enough that he never even saw it coming.  From out of nowhere someone or something pushed Jamie back and a large room divider came sliding down from above, quickly separating the two.  Jamie ran up to the door and began to pound on it over and over again, but did not hear Darin answer.  She tried talking into the radio, but it appeared that the frequency was dead.   What was going on?  Jamie drew her gun.

* * *

Jamie kept calling to her partner:  “Darin, Darin can you hear me.  Darin Answer me.”

No Answer.  She pounded and pounded on the door more.

Darin and Jamie were never very trusting in all of this technological gadgetry and so Jamie reached into her back pocket and pulled out her back up radio…

“This is detective Carpenter, listen guys your lovely lapel mic has stopped working, but I thought to bring in a backup–thank you very much–I’m now sure what has happened here, but detective Frost and I have been separated by some type of wall.  The door we used to enter has been locked.  We need back up in here fast!”  No need to be quiet about it, break the door down.”

“Good evening Jamie Carpenter.”  A voice Jamie had never heard before.

“You don’t know who I am, but I have long waited to meet YOU.  The pleasure is all mine.  Please, enjoy the rest of your life detective, for it won’t be very long.  I’m sorry that your radio communications are falling on deaf ears…..or should I say dead ears.  Heh, heh, heh.  We tried to buy your communications guy out but he opted for early retiremnt….from life”

“Oh No, not Harley!”

“Oh, is—uh was Harley his name?  He was very loyal to you guys.  He did not die easily, but that just made it a little more fun for us.”

Jamie Dropped her radio, it was useless to her now anyway.  She stood there in shock.   Harley dead?  He was just a boy!  A boy with a big heart and a very pregnant wife.   How was Jamie going to break the news to her……Was Jamie going to get out of here and be able to do that.  The shock of the sitution had Jamie frozen and not not knowing what to do for the first time that she could remember.  Then a one word thoght flooded her mind all at once…….  Darin!

Jamie snapped out of whatever trance she was in.  She had a partner who was behind a wall, with no backup, no outside support and no idea what was facing him on the other side.  Whats more is he was on somebody’s hit list and Jamies was knew one thing was certain!  It wasn’t going to happen on HER watch!  How could she explain it to Toni…..would Toni even talk to her….and the kids…..and the unborn baby!  “Hang in there partner,” Jamie thought to herself, “I’m on my way.”  Jamie reached inside her jacket and flipped a switch…….

* * *

First reaction was automatic…..separated from his partner, in an unknown location, dealing with an unkown adversary, on unknown terms…..Darin drew his gun.

“Jamie!  Jamie!  can you hear me?”  Darin tried shouting to his partner.

No response.

“Jamie!  Can you hear me!”

Still Nothing.

Darin pounded on the wall hoping to get a response.  Each pound seemed to canceled out and became a flat thud that only reverberated on his side.  Nice touch, Darin thought.  Whoever set this up wanted anything that went on to go unnoticed to those on the other side of the wall.  The wall had some type of noise cancelling quality.

Then he remembered the radio!

“Frost to Carpenter, do you copy?”  Darin spoke into the lapel mic.  Nothing.   Darin exclaimed as harsh as he dared while still maintaining his testimony for the Lord.   How he hated some of new technology that he had not had the opportunity to test before.

Darin reached into his back pocket and pulled out his backup radio.  Frost to Capenter or anybody out there do you read me?

Darin didn’t get a response like Jamie did.  His radio was obviously being jammed somewhow.  Darin was greeted to stereo concerto of static.  The first thing that went through Darin’s mind was that somebody on the team had given information to “the other side.”  This was a setup and he had walked right into it.  Darin would have like to taken the time right at the moment to figure out exactly who that might be, but that was fruitless thinking at this point in time.  He has himself in a predicament that that he neeeded to find a way out of.”

So…if they were blocking the frequency, Darin thought, then they either had some borad spectrum frequency blocker which would do a blanket block of all for the channels–which would effect a broad range of people and attract lots of attention, or they must know the frequency that was going to be used—information only given to a handful of people—-that wouldn’t be hard to track down—and they could block the specific band.  Darin was hoping this was the case.

Darin and Jamie were always read for the radio problem contigency.   If their contingency plan for this particular case did not work then either Darin or Jamie had sold out.  Darin knew that was not the case.  Darin made sure his back was still to the wall and reached inside his jacket and flipped a switch.  He was greeted with just what he hoped to hear…and open communication channel.  Darin was about to speak when he heard a voice behind him greet him:

“Well, hello detective.  We meet again.”

Darin looked down and the radio, not able to believe his lack of luck.

* * *

Jamie didn’t hear anythign after she had first flipped her switch and thought for sure that something had happened to Darin.  But a few seconds later she heard the communication channel open.   She was about to speak into the radio when she heard two things that stopped her:

There was a vooice that was speaking to Darin!  It was the same voice as the guy on the Walkie Talkie.  This was getting very itneresting.   But at the same time, Jamie could hear footsteps approaching her ffrom two different directions.  She had to find a place to hide.  But where?  Everything was so open

* * *

Perhaps luck was not the term Darin wanted to use in this particular case.  There he stood staring  right at Mikey Capminieri.  Darin’s first thought as he stared into the face of this face of this disgusting slime ball who had to have all sorts of vermin running through his blood vessels was:  ‘they may take me out, but all of have to do is raise my gun and fire and the world could be rid of this slime.’  But Darin also considering what his selfish act would do to his wife, his children and his partner.  He had to buy time if he was going to stay alive.  Darin remembered his Dad use to always tell him ‘Son, you have enough time and you can do just about anything.”

Time.

Time was really a commodity that Darin did NOT have.  Right now he was not in charge of the clock.

Mikey Campinieri stood there in his tailor made, three-piece, pimp looking, navy blue suit with blue pin stripes.  He was wearing a white cloumbian hat with a borad brim. and a black band.  In his mouth was a hand rolled Cuban cigar.  Not lit.  Mikey Campinieri hated the smell of cigar smoke and did not permit smoking around him, but he really liked the ciagar in the mouth look, so he adpated it.  Mikey liked the taste of the tobacco leaves from  the Vuelta Abajo region of Cuba for their smooth, spicy, sweet flavor.  He always had some on hand.
Mikey’s henchmen stood flanking him.  Two on each side.  Mikey figured that would be enough to handle Darin if anything should go wrong with his little plan.  What could go wrong?  So far everything had worked out perfectly.  Mikey was pleased.  Nobody would have ‘buy the farm” for this one, Mikey thought.

“Darin,” said Mikey, “I hear that you’ve been dying to meet me.” Mikey began to laugh at  his own pun because dying was exactly what he had planned for Darin.  He stopped laughting and galnce around at his henchmen on either side when he realized he was the only one laughing at the joke.  The Henchmen got the message quickly and all began to laugh…whtether they really wanted to or not.  Since not laughing meant sure loss of life, they wanted to!

“I wouldn’t exactly put it that way, Mikey.  And pardon me for not laughing at your poor attempt at humor.”

All of the laughing stopped.  The Henchman were not sure what to do about this insult that had just been thrown into their bosses face.  It seemed like hours but only a second passed before two of them pulled their weapons and trained them on Darin.

“Hold your fire boys,” said Mikey, “I don’t want anybody to ruin my plans for the good detective.  Now, Darin, be a good boy.  Play nice and put down the gun.  Very slowly.  I don’t suggest you try anything stupid like shooting at me.  There are guns than these trained on you.”

Darin slowly laid his gun down on the floor.

“Very good.  Very good,” said Mikey, “I really thoughth this would be a little tougher.  I’m kind of disappointed.  Oh well.  Such is life.  Now Darin—Oh my, look at me,” said Mikey mockingly, “Look at my poor manners.  We have never officially met or been introduced.  Do you mind if I call you Darin?  After all it is only going to impact the next few minutes of your now rather short life/”

Darin did not answer.

“No Answer?  Perhaps you’re worried about your little friend.”

Darin cringed when Mikey referred to Jamie as his little friend.

“Ahh, now we get a reaction out of the brave detective.  Well, if everything goes according to plan, Detective Jamie Carpenter is about to “buy it” any second now.  I have four guys with pretty heavy firepower coming at her.  Two from either side.  Problem is she doesn’t know that.  That little lady is a goner.  Somebody turn on the speakers.  I want to hear the action.”

Every could now hear some scuffling and movement and then a series of gunshots.   Then an exclamation from Jamie, the her begging for her life,  another round of gunshots and quiet.

“Machine guns!   I heard Machine guns!  Excellent touch!  Whoever thought to bring the machine guns gets a $100,000 bonus!  Oh I wish we had time to get the camera’s installed.”

Unbeknownst to Mikey and his boys, Darin could hear the sounds on their poor quality speaker and his state of the art communications.  When Darin heard the shots and then the silence, his whole countenace sunk low…

* * *

Well, if everything goes according to plan, Detective Jamie Carpenter is about to ‘buy it’ any second now.  I have four guys with pretty heavy firepower coming at her.  Two from either side.  Problem is she doesn’t know that.  That little lady is a goner.  Somebody turn on the speakers.  I want to hear the action.”

Jamie could hear Mikey loud and clear throgh he communication device that she and Darin shared.

“Thanks Mikey,” she said, more for Darins benefit than anybody else’s, “Now that I know what I’m up against  I know how to deal it.  Darin I know you can’t respond, but just remember that I told you, you can never have too much fire power on operations like this.”

With that Jamie started reaching into pockets and piecing together a compact version of a german Uzi.  This one was customized though.  It fired from two barrels at once and held 40 bullets clips for each barrell.  Jamie had it togehter in no time with the two spare clips ready to go on.  She was crouched down and walking backwards.  It was dark so as long as he didn’t hit any light that angeled a reflection, she was OK.  Typically for this types of operations she dressed in dark and non reflective clothing.  Today was not exception.  Her face was blackened so that she was not so detectable in the dark.

Jamie could hear Mikey still cackling over the open communication channel with a  little impatience because his men had not started shooting yet.  He was threatening to send another couple of guys out.  Jamie didn’t need to complicate the odds so she thought she would force their hand.   They were obviously trying to locate her so that they did not shoot each other.

Jamie reached into her pocket and pulled out two time released low level flare.  She activated them and then counted to three before throwing them acorss the room and in opposite directions from each other.  As the flares landed they lit.  Two of the assailants fired on one flare and two fired on the other.  Jamie squeezed off every round she had in a sweeping motion back and forth as whe fired where she saw gunfire coming from.  Her reaction was faster than their reaction.  Then there was silence.

Jamie pulled out a light and found that she had dispatched her enemies.  She went over to one of them making very heavy foot falls and picked up one of their guns.  She then in a mocked mens voice said,

“Hey!  She’s still alive”

“WHAT!  STILL ALIVE?  KILL HER!” She heard Mikey say, even though it appeared the men had no way of hearing him, had they still been alive.   Jamie fired two rounds

BAM!  BAM!

She then screamed in her own voice…

“UGGGGGGH!  No, please, I’ll give you whatever you want.  Pleaaaaaassssssse.  Noooooooooo!

And while she was screamin no, she fired one more time….   BAM!  Then in her mocked male voice she said, “Well, she got one of us, but dat bullet in duh head should take care uv her for a good long time!”

Jamie could hear Mikey jumping up and down with glee and he promptly gave to order to cut off the speaker.  There would be nothing else enjoyable to hear.

When Jamie heard the click to confirm that the speaker was off she said into her open channel….

“I’m OK partner.  The next few seconds are crucial if we’re gonna make him buy this scenario.  Now is the time to look despondent and unresponsive.   Shedding a fake tear or two would be a nice touch, but even Mikey would think that out of  character.

“I’m looking for a way through this wall, when I find it….I’ll be there.”

I’m OK partner.  The next few seconds are crucial if we’re gonna make him buy this scenario.  Now is the time to look despondent and unresponsive.   Shedding a fake tear or two would be a nice touch, but even Mikey would think that out of  character for you, so skip that.

“I’m looking for a way through this wall, when I find it….I’ll be there.”

Darin’s countenance had already fallen becasue he thought there was a bad turn of events when he heard the other voices.  When Darin heard Jamie’s verification that she was OK, he wanted to jump up and down and leap with Joy.   God was watching out for them

Darin poured on the lost and distraught act.  He would not look up at Mikey (which was starting to make Mikey angry) and he would not respond.   But he knew not to keep it up too long or he might jeopardize his ability to draw out the time  and give Jamie the time she needed.

Darin looked up at Mikey.  Mikey beagn to glow again.

“So,” said Darin, “What do you plan on doing with me?  Gun shot to the head.  Kill me execution style like you did Alexander Jameson?”

Mikey was shocked for a second but then got almost a look of pride on his face as he said,
“Oh, you know about that do you?   I think I did a pretty good job on that hit.   Didn’t want to pawn that one off on anybody else.  He hurt the family.   I didn’t want an extended arm of the family doing that job.  I did it myself.  You shoulda heard him beg!”

“I know Alexander Jameson—-”

“Don’t you mean KNEW Alexaner Jameson?”  Mikey interrupted.

“He wouldn’t give you the pleasure of begging.  I don’t care what you tell you buddys and minions.  I bet you got so angry with him that he wouldn’t beg, that you offed him right there.  And tell me how many of you men did you have holding him, because if it was a one to one battle you wouldn’t be standing her right now.”

Darin could see in Mikey’s eyes that what he said was the truth.  Mikey was having a hard time trying to contain himself from this man who seemed to have the aiblity to see right through him and know that he was lying.

Mikey said, “Yeah.  OK, so it closer to like what you said.”

Darin grinned.

“Wipe the smile off yer face Frost.  I got something planned for you that you’re really gonna love.  Take a look around you at the four doors located at the four corners of the room.  There is hungry pitbull behind each one of them.  Haven’t been fed for four days, just wating for this moment.  I messed up with Alexander Jameson.  There was too much of him left to identify.  If there is anything left to identify you  by, it will take them a very long time to do it.  Although I don’t think these dogs will leave very much of you.”

Mikey laughed and as if on cue his henchman laughed with him.

“Now Frost, just to make you sweat, the doors are on time released swtiches.  You won’t even have the luxury of knowing exactly when they will open and you will meet your demise.  That I’m sure will be all the more enjoyable.  I would really like to stay for the festiviites, but you know how things are.  I have a family to run.  Thank goodness I will be able to run it without your pesky interruptions now.   But I must admint Detectvie Frost, you have been a very formidable opponent in these matters.  You made me think!”

“Really?  said Darin, “I didn’t know you could do that effectively with your third grade education.  Think that is!”

I OUGHT TO BLOW YOU AWAY RIGHT HERE AND LET THE DOGS EAT YOUR DEAD MEAT. Nobody Disses Mikey and lives!  NOBODY!”

Whew, Darin really hit a chord that time.  Mikey turned red as he yelled and and was so animated that his picture perfect hairsytyle was shaken all out of place.  But Darin got just the reaction he wanted.  The one that would buy some more time.  He knew that Mikey would not leave angry, that way he would not feel as though he had the upper hand.  So, Mikey would have to calm down and compose himself before he could strut out of the room in a much more confident and sure manner.

“Come to think of it, ” Mikey said in a voice that was beginining to get calmer, you won’t be alive when the dogs are done, so that little matter will be settled.  You really had me going there for a second Frost.  I don’t know what kind of game you’re playing, but I think its time to fold,” Mikey said making  reference to how a poker player surrenders.

“Now you have to wonder why you’re still alive and why I’m here talking to you.”

“You know, I was kind of wondering about that, ” said Darin.

“Well then, let me help you out.  You have something and we want it.  Alexander Jameson gave you some information that could hurt the family.  Know what I’m talking about?”

“Sure do.”

“Well then why don’t you tell me where I can find it”

“Why?  You’re already gonna kill me.  You killed my partner, you’ll proabably knock off my family just for a good touch.  What is the benefit of telling you where that information is?”

“The way I see it, Frost, you simply have no choice.”

“Sure I do and i have exercised my choice already.  Before coming here today, I made sure that all of the evidence I had to date would be handed over to magistrate Thomas in the morning.”

“Excellent,” said Mikey, “I own him.  I have for a while.  In fact all own all but four of the magistrates.  I’ll be working on Lewis, Simpson, Minasi and Cambell in the coming months.  But we have other things to do right now.”

That was exactly what Darin needed.  He needed to know who was on the Campinieri payroll and who he would be able to trust.  And if not him, he knew that Jamie was hearing it all.

“Well men, looks like the detective has taken care of everything nice and neatly for us.  We’re out of here.”  With that Mikey and his henchman turned to leave, but not before Mikey turned back and took a stab…….. “Oh detective, am I to understand that you hate dogs?”  And Mikey burst out laughing, his henchmen joining in on cue.

“I see you’ve done your homework, Mikey.  Am I supposed to be impressed?”  Darin called to Mikey, “Hey Mikey, I”ll call you tomorrow.  Lets do lunch.”

As Mikey and his minions left the builiding he made sure th call back,  “This time tomorrow Frost, I’ll be sending the police an anonymous tip about where to find your remains. You wont’ be doing lunch with anybody anymore.   Enjoy your buddies…….whenever they get lose!”

With that Campinieri and company were gone.

Expect a Miracle Chapter 5 Excerpt

Sorry folks, but I can’t give you a decent excerpt from Chapter 4 without taking an REALLY HUGE chunk of text, so here’s a piece from a scene I just finished in Chapter 5…

DJ and Lisa had gone shopping  at the mall.  Well, Lisa was shopping, DJ was along because she was not permitted to go alone.  DJ really had his whole day planned out already and this was not on his list.  So, while he was not to terribly excited about going shopping, he did get some pleasure in that fact that his sister was getting to do something that she wanted to….just becuse he was there with her.  But, of course, there was no way he was going to let HER know that.

DJ wouldn’t be caught dead or alive in the ladies clothing department and made his way over to the electronics section  to check out the newest gadgets, with plans to head over to sporting goods –where real men waited– after that.  While he was still in the electronics section, Lisa came over and wanted to ask his opinion about some of the things she had picked out….

“DJ, do you think this blouse goes with this skirt?, ” Lisa asked as she held up a long purple skirt and a purplish-pink blouse with silver sequins on it.

DJ looked at it for about .0083 seconds and glaced back a the video camera display as he asnwered, “Looks like a winner to me, Little Sis.”

“You hardly even looked!  And I really wish you would stop calling me Little Sis.”

“Well, I am your big brother, you know.”

“DJ, last time I checked, we were still twins.”

“True that, but one of us had to come out first.”  And with that DJ raised his hand.

“OK, OK, you’re very good at pointing that one out.  How can I ever forget it.  Don’t expect me to go around calling you big brother!”

“How about this?,” Lisa asked as she held up another top.  This was was off white with light purple glimmering lines.

DJ glanced quickly again.  “Doesn’t matter what I think about that Little Sis.  Mom and Dad won’t like it.  Its cut tool low at the neck.”

“There you go with the Little Sis thing again.”

DJ raised his eyebrows twice in rapid succession and his sister knew he was being intentionally fecetious.

Lisa had had it.  She went to make her purchases and she was going to leave without letting DJ know.  Then he would really be in trouble when she got home and he wasn’t there yet.  The only problem with her plan is that DJ knew better than let his sister out of his sight, especially when she was about to get ready to pay for purchases.  So DJ followed her, but stayed out of sight.  She wouldn’t know that he was still there.  When Lisa got in line a the register she had to wait for a while because the lines were long.  In the process of waiting a couple of thuggish looking teens got in line behind Lisa.  DJ already did not like the way they were gawking at his sister.  His antennas went up and he was on full alert.  To make matters worse, when Lisa finally got up to the register, she pulled a hundred dollar bill out of her wallet to pay for her purchases.  DJ watched the characters behind her and they suddenly decided they didn’t want to wait any longer and left their items at the register and walked out of the store.  DJ could see trouble coming.  He better get up there with his sister.

In the process of trying to get to Lisa, DJ bumped into a lady and caused her to drop the items she was carrying.  He HAD to stop and apologize and pick up the items for the lady.  She thanked him and let her know that she appreciate his kindness.  DJ looked up, Lisa was gone.  OH NO!

He walked out onto the mall and and he could see the “thugs” following close behind his sister and she rushed down the main aisle heading toward the entrnace where they left thier bikes.  DJ had to think quick.  Her ran down the ailse on the other side and went past his sister, who never even noticed that he passed.  Then he turned around and began walking her way.  DJ had miscalculated his steps and the “thugs” reached Lisa before he did.  These guys did not appear to be too shy.  Here they were in the the height of day and they were going to take what they wanted.  Where was security?  Why wasn’t anybody  trying to help?

DJ joged up quickly and said, “Hey Lisa, long time no see.  Who are your buddies?”

One of the thugs looked DJ up and down once and said, “Get lost little dude.  The girls with us and she don’t want nothing to do with you right now.”

“Sorry,” said DJ, “But “the girl, ” as you say, is my girlfriend and she is not going with anybody but me.”

“Well, your girlfriend is flashing some pretty big bills and we’d  just like to, well you know, talk to her for a minute.”

With that one of the guys reached out his hand to push DJ away.  DJ went into attack mode.  His years of trainging and being a third degree black belt kicked in.  In a matter of seconds he had incapacitated his first opponent and the second one let Lisa go and siad he was just kidding.  He didn’t really mean anything.  DJ grabbed his sister by the arm and off they went without further incident.  As happens in most cases, the people who were not willing to lift a finger to help sure were willing to be spectators.   When it was apparent that DJ had single handed foiled the “bad guys’ ” plan, everyone in the mall erupted with applause.  The bad guys were on their way out…one with just a little help…before the authorities arrived and there were questions to answer.

When they got outside of the doors Lisa broke down in tears.  DJ consoled his sister.  She sure was glad he was around.  After a few minutes of crying on his shoulder and a big bear hug, Lisa looked up with a sly smile on her face and said, “Hey, by the way, thinks big brother.”

To which DJ replied, “No prbolem Little Sis.”  And from that day forward, whenever DJ called Lisa little sis she did not mind at all and many times when she introduced DJ it was as her big brother, not her twin brother.

As was normal procedure, DJ used his cell phone to call his Dad and fill him in on the details of what had just transpired.  For some reason, DJ sensed that his Dad was not as worried as he was at other times, but he just kind of shrugged it off.

Upon reaching home DJ and Lisa saw an unfamiliar car in the circular driveway of their home.  They looked at each other with the  same knowing glance….Unmarked Police Cruiser.  They had no question, because they had been taught by their Dad to recognize the on site; incase they ever needed help.  This meant that Dad was probably going to be busy and they were going to have to wait to have an audience with him..

DJ and Lisa could hear their  father laughing uncotrollably.  He heard when they had entered the house and summoned them into his office.  Not wanting to disturb the meeting, the walked up the door to see what their Dad needed.  As they got to the door, thier Darin busted out into an even bigger laughing fit than he was having when they first came in.  And it wasn’t because of the wide eyed look that DJ and Lisa had on their faces as much as it was because of the even wider-eyed like the two men seated in Darin’s office had on their faces.

Darin waved the kids in.

Immediately DJ blurted out, “Dad those are the guys.  Those are the teenagers that tried to rob Lisa!”

Darin was taken back by his Dad’s outburst of laugher, but Darin quickly got back under control becuase he needed to explain.

“Well Jr., they look like teens but —”

“JR?” Both men exclaimed at the same time.  You mean that’s—”

“I would appreciate it if you gentleman did not interrupt me, and yes, that’s my son.  Now, as I was saying… these are no teens.  These men are Police Academy trainees who get assigened special jobs on the weekend.   They saw Lisa here flashing some cash and they knew she was my daughter because they have seen her come to visit at the office.  You, Darin, on the other hand, they have never seen in the office becasue they have not been around when you were there.”

“Well to make a long story short, they thought Lisa was alone and they were going to help me out by making sure that she was safe.   Now….what they SHOULD have done, was identify themselves and produce a picture ID.  Then neither of you would have had any problems.  And you, Darin, doing exactly as you were taught took control of the situation, and from what I have heard now from 4 different accounts, put yourself in harms way to save your sister.

“Let me introduce you to Office Candidate Mik Monroe, and Officer Candidate Terrance Wilkinson.”

DJ and Lisa said Hi.

“Wish we could say the pleasure was all ours, but I think I’ll reserver that comment for another time,” said Wilkinson, the injured officer.”

Darin dimissed that kids and let them know eveything was just fine.

When they got out of earshot, Lisa turned to DJ and said,

“So, you took out two cops!  Man you’re good.  Hey, since I really wasn’t in any danger and you technically didn’t save me, we can drop the big brother stuff, right?”

“Not on your life, Little Sis.”

Lisa nodded her head slightly in the cute way that she does and gave DJ that little smile which sometimes melted DJ like it did his Dad, and that let him know everything was alright and she really didn’t mind.   She was really proud of the way Darin had protected her.

“You got it Big Brother.  Thanks for being there.”

With that she gave DJ a big hug and they went off to their respective rooms.  In the distance, Dad as still laughing.

Chapter 4 Excerpt Coming This Weekend!

Stay “tuned” or blogged, as the case may be, for a new excerpt to be posted sometime this weekend.  I would have had it up here already, but I didn’t expect Chapter 4 to be so involved.  In fact, I am currently workign on extensive material that just came to as I was writing and is not on my already exhaustive 66 page outline.

Expect a Mirale Chapter 1 Excerpt

I’m currently working on Chapter 4, but here is an excerpt from the first Chapter. Tell me how you like it.

Expect a Miracle

Chapter 1

Alexander Jameson (called AJ by his friends) walked into the Swiss Royal Bank’s United States based branch. He had to make a special trip to New York just for this purpose. He charged it to the police department, stating that he was on “official police business.”

One might say that he was not himself today.Alexander Jameson was disguised. He took great pains to make sure that no one cold see through his disguise. His hair was a bright red-today. He was your typical “carrot top.” He was wearing the finest clothes and the most expensive jewelry that money could buy. Some would say that he looked “simply dashing.” He requested to speak to the bank president, wishing to obtain a large safe deposit box. He carried a black leather case and looked very “business-like.”The Bank president, Cory Singleton, came out with a broad smile on his face. Singleton was always happy to see a client who would had the potential to help improve the status of his institution. He introduced himself:

“Hi, I’m Cory Singleton, President of the United States Branch of the Swiss Royal Bank.”

“Sylvester Feldman is the name. I need to lease a safe deposit box, please.”

“No problem. We of course, have several levels of security and the boxes are priced accordingly. We have —”

Feldman interrupted, “I’ll take the highest level of security that you have with a triple key validation; and I am prepared to pay the $10,000 lifetime lease rate.”

“You realize sir, that means we need to have a representative from Switzerland here to set up such an account. This is usually arranged in advance so that-”

Feldman held up his hand, stopping Singleton in mid-sentence.Mr. Singleton, I do not wish you to think that you have been circumvented in any way. However, if we could begin the process, I assure you that YOUR representative from Switzerland will be here before we have come to a conclusion.”

Singleton did not know why, but he believed Sylvester Feldman. They went back to Singleton’s office and started processing the paperwork. Just as Singleton requested that Feldman provide proof of identity, and other such verification, a very deep voice rang out, “That won’t be necessary.”

In the doorway stood Anders Freelan. Cory Singleton was on his feet right away. This was NOT just a Swiss Royal Bank representative; Anders Freelan was his uncle and the head of the Swiss Royal Bank. In fact you could say that Freelan WAS the Swiss Royal Bank.

“Uncle Anders!” said singleton, “Sir! This is very unexpected. You have never come unannounced before. I-I ha-ha-had n-no idea!”

“Sit down Cor,” said Anders Freelan, using his nephew’s familiar nickname. “Relax! Let’s not have a cow now. If this is man is who I think he is, then you can stop that paperwork right now.”

Feldman turned around and looked at Anders Freelan and said to him, with a slight smirk on his face, “did I ever tell you about the time I was in NAM?”

Anders Freelan nearly leapt across the office to greet the man with an aggressive handshake and a massive bear hug.

NAM.

Viet Nam.

Seeing Anders Freelan standing in the door brought back a flood of memories from a time in the past that neither man thought they would ever revisit again…
